For a category containing films that were entries to THAC, see Category:Twenty-four Hour Animation Contest brickfilms
The Twenty-four Hour Animation Contest, commonly abbreviated to THAC, is an annual brickfilming contest with a time limit of exactly 24 hours. Participants must shoot, edit, and submit a brickfilm within a specified 24-hour period. It usually occurs on a weekend around the beginning of each year. THAC 1 - 4 were hosted unofficially on the Brickfilms.com forums between 2005 and 2007, and THAC has been primarily hosted on Bricks in Motion since 2008, with the first one as an official contest of the site being THAC 7 in 2010. The contest was primarily conceived by Robinson Wood and Stephen Nolen and was originally hosted by David West, and has been run by various other individuals since 2008. The current host of THAC is William Osborne.[1]
THAC is the sister contest of the Brickfilm Rapidly All Week Long Contest (BRAWL), which is also officially run by Bricks in Motion.
Origin[]
The Twenty-four Hour Animation Contest originated from a concept for a brickfilming competition posted by Robinson Wood to the Brickfilms.com forums in January 2005.[2][3] The concept was for a contest in which animation time would be limited to one hour. He referenced that an influence on his idea was the Brickfilms.com member "Antiggo", who sometimes shared his entries to "speed modeling" challenges in a Blender community, in which participants had 30 minutes to model and texture something specific (plus some more time to render). Wood presented a clip he had made in one hour as an example of the kind of brickfilm which might be produced for such a contest, and predicted that the average length of entries would only be around 5-10 seconds. He asked for feedback on the idea, and the general opinion was that the idea for a time-limited contest was good, but that one hour was too short. Robinson Wood suggested that it could be some other time frame within one day, or else a weekend. The idea for a twenty-four hour contest was put forward in the thread by Stephen Nolen:
"Maybe a ‘one day film’ with the subject matter being introduced at a certain time one day and films expected to be posted before a 24 hour deadline?"
- Stephen Nolen
While the original concept was centered on an honor system, discussion of how to prove films were made in the time-frame did begin in the thread. The idea of a mod element (conceptualized as a "special brick") that is announced at the start of the time-frame and must always be visible in entries was first suggested by Brendan Henry. Discussion of the contest concept continued primarily among Wood, Nick Maniatis, and David West, though went quiet for a while as they waited for the official Brickfilms.com Heroes and Villains Contest to conclude before announcing another contest. The final idea was for a contest lasting 24 hours using a letter mod element, which would start at noon GMT on a Saturday. (The initial idea was for it to start at midnight GMT, but Stefan van Zwam suggested that starting it at noon would ensure that the 24 hours would be entirely within the weekend across all time zones in the world.) The first Twenty-four Hour Animation Contest was announced with David West as the host on August 9, 2005.[4] Robinson Wood chose not to be the host because he wished to enter the contest (though ultimately dropped out of THAC 1 half way through, and only ever entered THAC 2).
THAC 1 - 4 were held on the forums of Brickfilms.com, but THAC didn't become an official contest of the site itself. The site owner at the time, Joshua Leasure, explained that he wanted entries to official contests to not use copyrighted material, and felt that THAC entries relied on quickly grabbing existing music and other material.[5]
The first THAC[]
The first THAC was hosted by David West on August 27 - 28, 2005. It was scheduled to start at 12 noon GMT, but started half an hour late because David's alarm clock didn't go off.[6]
David West had an idea for entrants to document their THAC experience in video recordings, which he planned to compile into a group documentary. Although this group video did not come to fruition due to a very small number of submissions, there was a 20-minute THAC documentary made by entrant Robert Graff. This type of video would become a long-running tradition of THAC, and they would become known as "THACumentaries" (a name seemingly coined by Kate Fischer during THAC 4).
- Theme: General (i.e. no theme)
- Mod Element: N
22 of the films entered successfully followed the rules and qualified[7][8] and they were judged by ballot in 4 separate categories: Animation, Cinematography, Sound Design, and Story. Judges, Entrants and Audiences could submit their top ten films in each category. Most of the prizes were provided by Nick Maniatis, and the judges were David West, James Morr, Brendan Henry, Robinson Wood, and J. Watson.[9]

There were insufficient ballots cast by the audience to determine a ranking for the proposed Audience Choice prize. It was decided that Kate Fischer would be rewarded for being the entrants choice runner-up, receiving the prize that was going to be for the audience choice award.[10]
The disqualified entries were AntiD by Stephen Nolen (mod element blocked from view at times), Bart at Work by "3lb4rt0" (not enough animation), Essay Time by Max "Super Cameraman" Goldberg (wrong mod element), The LEGO Dead by Gavin Scott and Phillip Hodgson ("strange little people") (submitted as a .wmv file), The Puzzle X by Mark "skudmunky" Williams (late entry), Romantic Antic by Julian "JCCLIPS" Chelo (mod element blocked from view at times), and The Talk by "CJ Studios" (submitted as a .wmv file).
THAC 2[]
Shortly after THAC 1, people were already floating the idea that THAC should occur again in the next year. In July 2006, Kate Fischer posted a thread suggesting that THAC be run again and become an annual event, which received an enthusiastic response. THAC2 was run by David West and began at 12 noon GMT on August 19th, 2006. It received 24 accepted entries,[11] though some were later disqualified from ranking. The judges were David West, Brendan Henry, and J. Watson. James Morr also submitted a ballot that was rejected for being incomplete, but was used to break a tie between the films that ended up in second and third.[12]

THAC 3[]
THAC 3 was run by David West from August 4 - 5, 2007. This contest introduced the concept of two mod elements: the previously established letter mod element, and/or two colors visibly joined together, which was a suggestion from Joshua Leasure due to feeling that the letters stuck around the place in previous THAC entries were distracting. The theme, "What Really Happened", was a suggestion by Jay Silver. THAC 3 was scheduled to begin at 12:00 noon GMT, but started two hours late because David West had a power outage and his internet was down.[15] It received 27 accepted entries.[16] After only receiving a ballot from one other judge, David West elected to use the Entrant's Choice ballots to determine the Judge's Choice winners, and Joshua Leasure's ballot would determine the single Entrant's Choice winner: Philip Heinrich, for The Pepperonis (who received a Brickfilms.com DVD, donated by Leasure).[16]

Disqualified entries included Cops and Robbers by Joseph Hayden, Nightmarish Murder X by "3dbrickman", People Come In. Pizzas Come Out. by Kevin Horowitz and Jacob Schwartz, and Transformers by Marc "GopedGuy" Pierson.
THAC 4[]
"Say, if more people are in favor of doing this more often, how would a winter THAC sound? Maybe one over Christmas Break? I wouldn't mind running a few more before I have to pass the baton on to someone else when I join the Army next summer."
- David West
As David West would not be available to host in summer 2008 and due to demand for more, he decided to host another THAC in 2007. THAC 4 was the first to take place over the winter break, which would later become the standard time period for the contest. THAC 4 began on Saturday, December 29, 2007 at 12:00 Noon GMT.[17] 29 entries were received.[18] It is the last THAC to be hosted by David West, and also the last to take place primarily on the forums of Brickfilms.com, before the community members who were active at the time began moving to Bricks in Motion.[19]

THAC 5[]
In March 2008, shortly after the community that had been on Brickfilms.com had begun moving to ilovebrickfilming.com (later to be renamed Bricks In Motion), Scott "Uncle_Cheesedog" Loeppky began discussion on hosting a contest similar to THAC to quickly get new films on the new site.[21] He eventually contacted David West and got permission to continue the Twenty-four Hour Animation Contest name.[22] West had already been thinking about passing the baton since he would be joining the army in summer 2008. Loeppky announced THAC 5 only two days before it took place, leading many users to complain that they hadn't been given enough notice.[23] A second round, "THAC 5B", was therefore held a week later to compensate. The two parts took place on March 29th and April 5th 2008. THAC 5A received 19 entries[24] and THAC 5B received 21 entries.[25]
The combined 40 entries were judged as one single contest, though entrants who entered both rounds only had one film appear on the judges results, leaving 37 entries.[26] Every entry was first ranked by a judging panel consisting of Scott Loeppky, Simon Lunn and Chris Boyer. The top 11 ranking films (instead of 10 due a tie) were then judged by a public vote.[27] All finalists were required to vote in order to be eligible for prizes. The prizes were 4954 Model Town House for first place, 6177 Basic Bricks Deluxe for second and 5574 Basic Bricks for third.

THAC 11.5[]
THAC 11.5 was an April Fools joke posted by Harry Bossert on April 1, 2014. The thread stated "You asked for it! Everyone said they wanted more THACs, so here you go. We have become increasingly worried about cheaters, so we have to tighten up the restrictions. The theme is impatience and the mod elements are the colours red, blue, white and green, and the word "ducks". One of those must appear in every frame of your animation. Blah blah blah, you know the rest. Hop to it!" Some people actually made films for THAC 11.5; Impatience by Al Nickels, thak 11.5 by Kaleb Barkman, DUCKZ by "Greenshirt", and The Impatience Duck by Noah Frazier. They were not ranked, as the only "results" was a joke list with unrelated videos.
THAC XII[]
THAC XII was hosted by Nathan Wells on January 3, 2015.[45] This was the first THAC where the mod element was only required to be in each shot rather than each frame. A total of 69 entries were accepted, the majority of which can be found here. The judges were Nathan Wells, Timothy Ratner, Christian Colglazier, Nathan Rossi and Philip Heinrich.[46] Prizes were donated by Nathan Wells and Jorden Davis.[1]

THAC XVI[]
In 2018, Nathan Wells passed control of THAC to Nathan Mellace. A vote on the Bricks in Motion forums decided the date for THAC XVI to be January 5-6, 2019.[55] The rules were updated so that up to 15 seconds of footage in an entry was not required to include the mod element, to allow for close-ups or other such shots that make incorporating the mod element difficult (or also potentially to reduce the amount of reshooting required on account of forgetting to include the mod element in a shot).[56]
THAC XVI received 84 accepted entries, which was the most ever until THAC XVIII.[57] The playlist can be found here. The judging panel for THAC XVI consisted of Rachel Dew, Jared Gilbert, Nate Swihart, Chris Wynn, and Nathan Mellace.[58] The prize pool consists of the LEGO sets 40274 Mr. & Mrs. Claus BrickHeadz, 31080 Modular Winter Vacation, and 60202 Minifigures Pack: Outdoor Adventures.
