The LEGO Movie Rebuilt is an upcoming reanimated collaboration community project brickfilm being coordinated collaboratively by Brickfilm Day and Bricks in Motion. It will see the 2014 film The LEGO Movie recreated and reimagined by many brickfilmers, primarily in stop-motion animation, and with minor deviations from the original film allowed.[1] It is inspired by previous online collaboration projects such as Shrek Retold.[2] It is planned to be released in 2024, which is ten years after the release of The LEGO Movie.

History[]

On April 12, 2022, in the Brickfilm Day Discord, Jared Van Bever lightheartedly posted "Who wants to make a community recreation of American Psycho". This led to some discussion of the topic of full movie recreations in LEGO. "Vertical Bricks" asked the question "wait are there "the lego movie recreated in lego" videos?", and pinged Bricks in Motion co-admin Seán Willis. Willis replied, "I've only ever seen brief bits", "1 minute or so", "I have thought that the ultimate community project would be to reanimate the whole film to release it in 2024 for the 10-year anniversary", and "with the sets scaled down/done in peoples own styles, of course". This led to other people stating that they would actually be on board for that concept, and Willis proposed that the bulk of the project should be stop-motion animation, and the credits animation should be remade in CG, as this would be the inverse of the original film. Willis also stated that new audio should be created by contributors, and posted Shrek Retold as a point of comparison.

It was suggested that this should be an official Brickfilm Day project, and Willis agreed due to Brickfilm Day's history with completing large collaborations, and also proposed that it be organized in official collaboration with Bricks in Motion. Brickfilm Day co-admin Lewis Townley subsequently saw the discussion that had been taking place, liked the idea, discussed it with other admins, and declared that the project would happen, but that it would take a lot of organizing and that people shouldn't expect to hear more soon. In 2023, brickfilmers began to be invited privately to claim footage and begin animating it, so that the project could later be opened up to the public with something to show for it and a fair bit of progress already made, to instill confidence in it. On February 7, 2024, the 10-year anniversary of the release of The LEGO Movie, The Lego Movie Rebuilt - Official Trailer was shared, announcing the project to the public and also inviting people to apply to be animators, voice actors, or composers. The full project is intended to be released later in 2024.[3]
